Technology Today

After Rooney got a lovely suprise tax rebate we have been waiting for the cheque to clear so that we could go out and buy ourselves Kinect and although we have played it before it’s still amazing how it works, no controller apart from you, your body and voice.

This has got me thinking about technology and how in my 24 years of life i’ve had many moments where technology has managed to suprise me so I decided to turn my ponderings into a blog.

My first experiance with a computer was an old Dragon computer, i’m not sure whether it was the 32 or 64 we had but I thought it was brilliant, being able to type and it appear on screen which is pretty much all we could do with it. This was followed up with using my Grandad’s PC where my brother and I played the Monkey Island games, Indiana Jones and a Sherlock Holmes game. Obviously compared to the Dragon this seemed magical. It seemed so modern being able to have a save function in games, having so much control over your character and also being able to play a game in colour.

When it came to games consoles my brother bought the Sega Mega Drive where we obsessively played Alex Kidd, Sonic and my all time favourite Sega game… Phantasy Star which again was impressive compared to the other games at the time because it had a save function which was a life saver for such a long game. When the Sega Mega Drive came about I remember my brother buying it from Lakeside and the excitement that came with it.

The release of the Gameboy gave me all sorts of possibilities, I loved being able to take it anywhere with me and being able to stay up all night playing it on silent with my magnifying glass light that I pestered my Mum to buy me which I think she ended up getting for me for my birthday or Christmas.

I remember when we got the internet at home and not being allowed on it and my brother being able to use it for about ten minutes a day, when my Mum finally let me use it I couldn’t get enough and developed a slight addiction to it. I used it mainly for chat rooms where I could be whoever I wanted to be and was allowed to be confident because nobody knew who I was although there was a more personal use to the internet which was Teenopendiary.com which I don’t think needs a description as the name sums it up, this was followed by Melodrama.com which gave us a new word to our vocabulary ‘Oh you are so melodramatic’ which obviously made us seem very grown up. I also got slightly addicted to Neopets, MSN and then more recently Myspace and then finally (for now) Facebook.

Between then and now my life includes the use of the Playstation, PS2, Tamagotchis and various other forms of tecnology but i’m finally going to get to the point. Rooney bought the XBox 360 which was never something that had interested me, I was happy with my PC games and PS2 and besides the XBox didn’t have many games that took my fancy… until I descovered Lego Star Wars and then I was much more interested. I then started playing Unreal Tournaments and Fable 2 and gave a few other games a go. I then decided to pay out for an Xbox Live subscription and I have never looked back. I love being able to see what my friends are playing, comparing achievements, having the ability to talk to someone with the headset and being able to try demos and keep up to date with new releases and obviously playing online. I thought all of this was pretty impressive and then they announced that they’d be releasing Kinect which I seriously didn’t think would work so smoothly, I also thought we’d have to wait a lot longer for it to be released but anyway and now we have it and I am very excited. I have ordered Dance Central and I can’t wait to get it! Hopefully me and the Roondog will finally manage to lose some of this extra weight we’ve been trying to shift and it also coincides with our New Years Resolutions of being more active. Anyway i’m intrigued to see what technology brings us next!

Major Update

I know, I know… I said i’d blog more and I didn’t stick to my word so i’m sorry!

Anyway, so I work for a private healthcare company as a non-aseptic which basically means I santise everything that the fillers need to make TPN and drugs for our patients. It’s very repetative and can be boring but I work with some amazing people and they make the job enjoyable. Sometimes it gets to me and as a struggle with depression it’s a job where sometimes I spend hours on my own with only my thoughts to keep me company which can be dangerous and I did recently have a bit of a breakdown (possible blog for the future when i’m feeling more open to talk about it) but i’ve sorted my head out again so i’m good now.

So Christmas has been and gone, Rooney and I started getting prepared for Christmas in September when we bought our first Christmas present. We were very excited and spent so much money buying lovely presents for our dear friends and family but before we knew it it was over and back to normal. We took our Christmas tree down a couple of weeks ago and I found it quite sad but now i’m quite glad it’s over. Work was stressful over Christmas as I had to work through most of it and we had more work on due to a lot of patients wanting to be home over Christmas.

Next we had my birthday/New Years Eve which Rooney and I made the most of despite some of our best friends not being there (lame). But we went to The Square and there was loads of people there who we definatly don’t spend enough time with and all in all it was a good and rather messy night.

For my New Years Resolutions mine are as follows…

1) Lose weight/get fit, I know it’s one of the obvious ones but since my second year at university my weight has gone up and down between a size 6 and size 14. At the moment i’m a size 12 and I want to eventually get down to an 8/10, this will hopefully be achieved by healthier eating and exercising.

2) Be more sociable. I have a ton of people who I want to spend more time with and I don’t for different reasons so thats sometime I want to work on. I need more fun in my life and thats definatly the way forward.

3) Be more creative. I tend to be a bit lazy when it comes to my photography and art but it’s something I want to get back in to. I’ve been trying to get ideas but I have a bit of a creative block at the moment (any ideas would be appriciated).

4) Read more

And thats it for now.

Lots of love xxx
